Using larger ammo with the catchbox

When using bigger, heavier ammo, your catchbox setup might need a bit of reinforcement to handle the added impact. Larger, denser projectiles hit with more force, which can strain the catch material and even cause it to wear out or fail faster if not properly cushioned. For these cases, adding extra padding to the catchbox can help absorb the impact and prevent ricochets.

A practical solution that many slingshot enthusiasts have found effective is repurposing old T-shirts or other soft, dense fabric. These materials work well because they provide enough give to absorb the ammo's force without bouncing it back. Layering several T-shirts or rags can be particularly effective, and because they’re soft and lightweight, they tend to stop even the heaviest ammo without much fuss.

For the best results, suspend the fabric layers loosely within the catchbox, ideally with enough space so they don’t touch the sides or bottom. This allows the fabric to move and "catch" the ammo's energy without causing it to deflect off the sides or create tension points. Avoid fixing the fabric too tightly, as a taut surface might make ricochets more likely, especially with heavier ammo.

With some trial and error, you can adjust the number and type of fabric layers to match the type of ammo you’re using, creating an adaptable and effective catchbox setup that’s easy on both the box and the budget. This small tweak can extend the life of your catchbox and provide a safer shooting environment.
