I want to shoot the most powerful bands available. Can I do that?
You can definitely shoot powerful bands, but there are a few things to keep in mind before going all in. Just because a band is heavy doesn’t mean you’ll automatically get a faster shot—it’s actually all about balance.
Heavier bands need heavier ammo to be effective. If you use light ammo with powerful bands, the projectile won’t have enough mass to absorb the energy, and that energy gets wasted. Not only does that decrease your efficiency, but if you’re shooting OTT, you’re also more likely to experience "hand slap," which can make shooting uncomfortable. (Watch it happen here!).
For optimal performance, it’s best to match your bands with the right ammo. Slingshots aren’t like bows—more weight doesn’t always mean more speed. Heavy bands can even cover up inconsistencies in your release, leading to bad habits if you’re not careful.
A good approach is to start with lighter bands and work your way up as you get the hang of it. Missing the target with more speed still means missing the target. Plus, with a better understanding of your technique, you’ll improve your accuracy before you pile on too much power.
